Tibby, Pat and I visited the Cloof Wine Estate which is 25kms from the town of Darling in the Western Cape, off the road to Malmesbury. See: www.cloof.co.za .
Their grapes are grown on bushes which, apparently, causes the grapes to be smaller and more intense. Their wines are mainly red and mainly blends. We bought:
Darling Daisy – an easy drinking 60% Chenin and 40% Sauvignon Blanc
Inkspot – a very easy drinking 58% Pinotage and 34% Shiraz
The Dark Side – a very dark lovely red 86% Cabernet Sauvignon and 14% Shiraz
Lynchpin – another special red 71% Merlot and 25% Cabernet Franc
Pinotage – wonderful!
Natural Sweet Chenin Blanc – a sweet dessert wine
We enjoyed every wine we tasted. They are special.
We also had lunch on the lawn beneath the vines on a beautiful day.
The Spanakopita starter phylo was delicate and the feta and sundried tomatoes enhanced the spinach making it so tasty. The aubergine pickle had a nice little kick to it.
The Lamb Neck Potjie had cooked for hours in Pinotage and with the couscous was lamb at its best.
Anthony Vianello and Jonno Proudfoot gave us wonderful service.
